For a quarter-final that could remove the tournament’s other commercial giant / 2022 final foes, FIFA appointed an all-Argentine on-field team — referee, assistants, fourth official, reserve — and then confirmed an Argentine lead VAR. BBC Sport: first same-country full on-field crew of the tournament; “not a great look.”

Argentina benefit if France fall before a Messi farewell final. Staffing that match with Argentines is classic conflict-of-interest appearance.

The Club World Cup Messi pathway

BBC Sport revived Infantino-era colour: for the Club World Cup in the United States, Inter Miami (Messi’s club) were selected as the US entrant even though LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup. Miami’s Supporters’ Shield path put Messi on the opening spectacle.
